Supervisory Police Officer

Supervises subordinate Police Officers in the enforcement of Federal and Kansas State criminal codes and Veterans Administration regulations originating in Federal Statues in the physical protection of patients, visitors and employees; the protection of property of the United States Government and personal property on medical center grounds; the protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property; determines need for and conducts searches and investigations. The Supervisory Police Officer works under the general supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police. They plan the daily duty schedules and monthly work roster to meet the overall schedules and operations priorities to ensure an even flow and distribution of work, following station policies, police procedures and security needs. The incumbent is authorized to change Patrol Officers duties to meet changes in workload, manpower, and overtime required to get the job done. The incumbent approves and/or disapproves ordinary annual/sick leave. At each tour of duty, they assign posts to Patrol Officers, informs them of all tasks that need to be accomplished during the shift, addresses crimes committed on the grounds and passes on information on suspicious individuals. Employs police skills and ensures subordinates are conducting vigorous and inquisitive patrol activities which assure random patrol patterns, meet special protective service requirements, and provide maximum visibility in corridors, wards, stairwells, and building perimeters to prevent the opportunity for crimes, such as assaults or the sale, distribution and use of illegal drugs. As an Officer, with prescribed powers of arrest for violations of federal offenses, the incumbent observes all activity occurring on the station and is constantly alert to unusual appearances, practices and appurtenances which deviate from the normal standards of the medical center environment and signal potential harm for patients, employees and visitors. The incumbent conducts crime scene assessments and arrests or directs the arrest of persons who have violated the U.S. Criminal Code. During supervision of medical center police operations, notifies higher authority, the FBI or local police (as appropriate to Federal Jurisdiction) of serious crimes and significant law enforcement actions taken. The incumbent applies attained proficiency in crowd and riot control, bomb threat and search organization procedures, and police skills and knowledge in gathering and preserving evidence, questioning witnesses, and preparing reports of preliminary investigation. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
experience leading police officers and providing guidance in a law enforcement setting; having a full and practical knowledge of and experience with the enforcement of federal and appropriate state criminal codes and agency regulations originating in federal statutes; experience applying security principles, concepts, methodologies, and applications; experience developing and planning crime prevention practices, policies, and programs; experience with laws involving arrest procedures, search and seizure, crime scene assessments, evidence seizure, crime classification, testifying in a court of law, civil and constitutional rights, drug identifications, obtaining arrest and search warrants, and any other aspect of law enforcement leadership required to assist in directing the Police Service at the facility. Physical Requirements:
Due to the high rise of our building and surroundings, the work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, running and frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs. May regularly require lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds. May require common physical characteristics and defend and/or subdue against uncooperative/resistive suspects. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants:
good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Agencies may establish additional, job-related physical or medical requirements provided that the specific position(s) involves the arduous or hazardous duties to which the physical requirements relate. Work Environment:
The incumbent is subject to all types of environmental factors (i.e., excessive heat, cold, rain, and snow). He/she is routinely exposed to toxic fumes, smoke and gas. The incumbent may also come in contact with biological/contaminated material. Due to the geographical location, in a high crime area, the incumbent may encounter individuals armed and unarmed that have or have intentions to commit a criminal act (i.e., auto theft, felony, assaults, narcotic transactions, etc.) The encounter could easily result to violence. Work is performed outside and inside. the incumbent is exposed to stressful situations when responding to a hostile environment. The incumbent could be required to work shifts lasting 12-24 hours without relief in order to meet minimum staffing requirement, especially during an emergency situation or natural disaster. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
