RARE 1935 Wm. S. HAYNES FLUTE, HANDMADE, FRENCH KEYWORK / C for sale in Wichita, KS
WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY, since 1953! Wm. S. Haynes, hand-made, Golden Age " flute, number 12,874 (1935) A = 440. For the flutecollector, the website for the W.S. Haynes flute company is of real value. All flutes, back to before 1900, are postedon the site. It's possible to learn the dateof manufacture and a bit of info on the specifications of each Haynes instrument. In 1935,Haynes produced 393 silver flutes. The shorthandof manufacturing specifications is a bit, however, confusing. As we read the chart, only a small number ofhand-made instruments were produced: perhaps fewer than twenty. Our flute, serial number 12874, was completed in January of 1935. It's shown as "t.h.m."with closed G#. Not sure what thatmeans, but we can confirm... Number 12874has built with full hand-made specs. Thatmeans soldered tone-holes, in-line G, extended key-arms and no adjustingscrews. I spent anhour yesterday comparing Haynes #12874 with Louis Lot #4202. I find the two flutes very similar. The Haynes, however, was constructed with.016 tube; the Lot measures .014 or abit less. The embouchureon our Haynes measures 10.2 X 11.8 mm, rather square in design. That's close to Theobald Boehm's originalrecommendation of "10.0 X 12.0, slightly square". Soundinglength is 601 mm and the head has not been cut or shortened or altered in anyway. We noteseveral "sterling" stamps on the instrument. From the late forties until recently, allHaynes silver flutes were built with .900 alloy, not sterling. We acquiredthe flute from a fellow who told us he bought it for his wife. And his wife simply did not like theinstrument. And we do understand why. The pads appear to be new or close to it,but they did not seat well. Wedisassembled the keywork, replaced half the pads, re-shimmed and seated theothers. We're pleased to report theflute now plays very well indeed, with a vintage Haynes singing voice that'squite unlike anything that's today made in Boston. So we givethis gem a top recommendation for a serious flutist but must say that it is nota modern "easy play" flute. Practicescales and Bach cello sonatas for three or four days and you'll discover it tobe a very special instrument. Highlyrecommended vintage Haynes that's quite different from the flutes oftoday.
